How it came together.
The old shingles at the end of their service life.
Old roofing and plywood off, new decking down.
Ice and water shield, synthetic underlayment and new drip edge.
New shingles, new vents and new gutters.
What we did.
For this Berkeley Heights project Landstar completed a full roof replacement. The crew removed the old roofing and the plywood underneath it, then installed new plywood decking, ice and water shield, synthetic underlayment and new drip edge. The roof was finished with new shingles and new vents, and the house was fitted with new gutters. The photographs follow the job from the failing original shingles through the bare new decking, the ice and water shield, the underlayment and valley flashing, and on to the finished roof and the new gutter runs.
Why it matters.
Replacing the plywood as well as the roofing is what separates a real replacement from a resurfacing. Decking that has been under a failing roof for several seasons has usually taken on moisture, and new shingles laid over it inherit that condition on day one. Doing the gutters in the same visit matters for the same reason. Under Berkeley Heights tree cover, gutters fill quickly and back water up under the eaves exactly where ice forms in January, so a new roof draining into old, leaf-packed gutters gives up part of what it was meant to fix.
